Research and Planning: Music Magazine Anaysis 2

I believe that this magazine is strictly a metal magazine rather than metal/rock like the first one I analyses. Unfortunately I don't recognize any of the bands but i can deduce that 'Manic Street Preachers' and 'Last Shadow Puppets' are metal bands.
Generally i would say that this has the same audience as the last magazine analyses that i did however i would comment tat it the minimum age may be a bit higher than the previous magazine. (as it looks more violent than the last). this is basically because of the 3 colours used being black red and gold, the red and gold writing stands off of the black background efficiently which makes the magazine eye catching and most likely is what draws in its audience to it at first. I mentioned the 3 colour rule however this magazine breaks convention and uses a 4th colour as white, this is once again to most probably make it stand out from the rest by breaking convention. the man stood as the central image has a determined facial expression this gives the impression that he knows what hes doing and wants to do it right. (which would be the concert as same as the image before it is a live shot at the concert) the camera had taken the image from a low angle while being zoomed in to a medium long shot this was done as it makes it seems like a picture was taken from one of the people in the crowd or even a type of point of view. this gives off the impression that this guy/brand is brilliant as everyone is staring right at him in awe combined with his determined face and his upright posture it does give off the impression that he is brilliant and you should like him because hes trying as hard as he can to do the best concert possible. The layout is interesting as you have what i think is the most important story in the middle of the screen, whats interesting is the fact that they have it blocking out so much of the central image making it seem like the image isn't the focus f attention. this could mean that the would like to focus on the articles rather than the bands and the music, which would differ from the previous.

Research and Planning: Music Magazine Analyse 1

This is a Rock/ Metal magazine I know this because of the bands that it mentions in the cover lines bands such as Slipknot and Megadeath are obviously metal bands whereas Green Day and Muse aren't, I know that there music is a lot softer than metal would generally be. The audience that I believe is being focused by the magazine would generally be teenagers and older. Generally a magazine like this would not focus in on the elderly or children as the songs would be too heavy for them to listen too comfortably. Therefore I would argue that the age range that it focuses would probably be 16 - 30 (give or take a couple of years) in general; the coverline "WTF..." enforces the idea that its targeted at teenagers but doesn't exactly prove my age range basis.
The coverline "this is the best show out there..." is directly linked to the central image as the central image looks like it was taken at a concert. at which point he would be staring into the crowd while playing the music. this gives quite a good representation as it shows that he is giving his audience his seemingly undivided attention. the image also gives off a slight arrogance about him. I believe this is shown as he appears to be playing his guitar with one hand, also it seems like he doesn't care much I gather this by his facial expression and the fact that he's slouching. It all seems like hes trying to be 'cool'. The shot type used was a high angled medium shot I know this because it is angled for him to look bigger (generally a connotation with making the person seem more impressive) and because the shot shows both the guitar which is held next to his waist and upwards. The magazine uses the three colours for text boxes and text however uses a background which I would say is used to highlight the text and the central image. The fonts that have been used are all blocked capitals of which are generally associated with shouting, however at the moment I would say that the caps would be just to state that the information that its giving is important. Parts of the central image I would mention are overlapping text boxes while other parts aren't, an example of this is that the guitar overlaps the yellow box containing the image and text about Slipknot however this same text box overlaps the mans arm. this could mean that the author decided that the guitar or music is more important than who is playing.

Research and Planning: Camera Angles

Research and Planning: Evalutaion of College Magazine

First off I believe that the font sizes are the appropriate sizes for both pages. My magazine does follow the ‘3 colour’ rule to a certain degree however my central image stands out of the background due to not following this. The colour scheme of white blue and black causes all of the text to stand out while transparency allows me to have a larger range of colours by simply using the 3 colours. I would say that the colours are similar in some places meaning that text may be difficult to read which is a big problem; one of these areas is along the t shirt of the central image as the two types of white appear to merge slightly causing a problem when reading, another area which this may appear in is the light blue box behind the text, however this doesn’t cause such a big issue as the two white colours.
I believe that it is obvious that the two pages (cover and contents page are from the same magazine) I believe this because of the font of the text and the background colours being in the same way. The font I used for both pages is called ‘ChalkDuster’ I used this font because it is meant to look like something has been written on a board in chalk. The background was utilizing all 3 of my colours therefore I believed that it was necessary to use this through to the next page and the next if it were necessary for me to make that. One thing that worries me about doing this is the fact that it makes the cover seem dull; the cover is meant to make the magazine stand out in order to get attention and effectively someone to purchase the magazine however since I used that background as a master style as I said I think that it makes the cover seem ‘dull’.
I believe that the photographs are well taken and are appropriate however I think that the lighting could have been better in the room, as it had given the image a slightly weird aura of yellow. The photograph is appropriate as the image is of a common college student, the binder he is holding enforces the fact that like a college student he has work to do, or needs to study, which enforces the idea that the image is of a college student.
There are 3 stories on the front cover, which I optimistically put on the contents page that they would cross over 2 pages each. On the contents page I added ‘future releases’ as an extra to enforce the idea that it was new as stated by the cover. Due to the research that I carried out I do believe that these stories are appropriate as several people said that they would want to read stories about things of which are going on in and around the college. Therefore I included such things as ‘college activities’ and since this is meant to be a new release for September I added the story about ‘ the transition…’ I added this as an idea, which would essentially draw in customers (who are new students) to purchase the magazine.

Research and Planning: Magazine Images

These are the two Images I used when creating my college magazine. The first image i used was on my contents page however i altered the image largely so t doesn't look the same aside from the writing.

Research and Plannning: Target Audience

I am directing my magazine to target a specific type of audience. My audience would be age 16-19 generally, because I believe that this covers all of the age ranges of the students in college. I would generally aim this at the more intelligent students if it were to be free, however if I could sell each one for £1 each I would target the general population of the college in order to maximize profits. Again it would depend if either the magazine is priced or not but the cover lines would either be gossipy (but not slanderous), or more intuitive.

Planning and Research: Interview Answers

Answer's main points:

1. All stated that they may purchase a college magazine as long as it were cheap "about £1", however they would prefer it to be cheap.
2. All wanted to know what was happening in the college. About students, college activities, enrichment. etc.
3. 2/3 said that the masthead was ok, however one suggested that it needed more colour to stand out.
4. They said a student or place within the college.
5. Most suggested more colour. I agree.

Research and Planning: Interview Questions

I have created several questions to ask my target audience as a type of 'market research' in order to create my college magazine in a way to appropriately target my audience efficiently.

The questions are as follows:

1. Would you purchase a college magazine? why? what price would you pay?
2. What type of stories would you want to read about in this college magazine?
3. Do you believe that the masthead is appropriate? (colour, font, Name)
4. What do you believe would be the best central image for this magazine?
5. What do you believe I could do to best improve my magazine? List as many points as you can.

Research and Planning: Mid Close Up

These 5 images are all examples of a medium close up. I know this because they are all both in between a medium shot and a close up.

Research and Planning:College Magazine Analysis

I know that this is a college magazine as the Masthead is 'College' which obviously states that this magazine is for a college, or college students. Another reason that i can tell that the magazine is a college magazine is because of the publication line as this states "college park edition" which is referencing the fact that is about colleges. The cover lines are all connected to college life which again shows that it is a college magazine and not one about films or books. One final way in which i know that it is a college magazine is the central image which is a woman who looks like she is in college, again reinforcing the idea that it is a college magazine. Also the layout and colours of it does show that it is for educated and intelligent people by the fact that they don't use bright colours and shapes to lure in its audience rather has a more professional approach to its front cover, using a 3 colour rule with the colours red, blue and black. since the the central image contains 2 of the 3 colours. the background is blurred to avoid drawing focus to the central image, who is staring into the camera to address the audience. of which i believe that the age of the target audience would be about 17 - 24 I think. I believe this because of the cover line "Avoid sleeping your way to the top" in which i would have thought wouldn't be such a cover line to be  targeting anyone younger.

Reasearch and Planning: Indesign Tutorial

This is what I created on indesign, to be honest I think it is a bit bland, and has too much writing contributing to the very small font size of 9. The blue background I feel is a little bulky for the review however it fits its purpose of me learning how to use he program.

> First I gt a review offline and placed it in  a word document after which i used create guides and made 3 columns.
> I placed my writing via the place tool. (the word document had to be saved as a .Doc file as any other file wouldn't work) at the end of the placement i clicked the + at the bottom of the placement to place another part of the writing.
> I used the place tool to move the picture into the document also.
> I used the typing tool in order to write the title, the moved to colour and changed all of the writing to white.
> I changed he background colour by drawing a square and then using the colour tool then sent it to the back so that it wouldn't be in front of my writing.

Research and Planning: Phtoshop Challenge

Photoshop challenge end result:
- A4 document
-Text in Century Gothic in size 24 font
- text is coloured red and in the centre of the page
- Background colour is blie
- Text has a drop shadow
- Placed a picture of someone from the internet under the text.
- Changed hair clour (kinda obviously) to gray.
- Drawn a border around person.

Reseach and Planning: Photoshop Skin Tutorial

This involved several tools on  photoshop such as spot remover, opacity,  smart blur and several layers.

In order to edit this picture in such a way fist i used the spot remover tool to get rid of a couple of blemishes next i created a copy of the background and blurred her out in order to get rid of the glare off of her skin while after that i changed the opacity of this new layer to keep the detail that would have been lost otherwise. Then i  re-coloured her hair, and changed the opacity of the brush to keep the details of her hair while recolouring it efficiently. i used the same way to give her lipstick and blusher. One final thing i did was to use he liquify tool to move her mouth in such a way to give her a small smile.

Finished result of my tutorial. in my opinion it is a good attempt but looks a little cartoony.

Research And Planning: Film Poster Activity

This was some more practice on photoshop. the idea itself had already been created however i thought i would give i ago myself this is the finished result from combining the two picture.

Research and Planning: Photoshop Tutorial

This is the first time i have used photoshop properly, although i have used several tools n photoshop i have never gone into any detail or depth since i just simply didnt know how to.

-First i copied the Cd picture over onto the background,  also copied the picture to have multiple versions on both sides too keep the cover even.
-The horn was cut out using the magic wand tool to select the white background, then using both similar and invert. (i had previously used the magic wand tool but not similar or invert). this was also dropped onto the background.
-I put a couple of filters onto the background, 1 being Chalk and Charcoal and then other being liquify. i also used liquify on the notes since i was unable to rotate them for some reason.
This is the result of the photoshop tutorial.
